This exhibition tells two stories.
One is about Lake Mungo. My Visit there two years ago and the work I developed as a result formed a link with Central desert paintings that had preoccupied me several years prior to that time.
The other story is about a country much closer to home - Wilson's Promontory and the area around Waratah Bay.
The Lake Mungo exhibition brought me nearer geographically, yet otherwise had no bearing whatsoever on my decision to turn my attention to the great south eastern coastal country. I just did turn my attention away from hot, parched earth, oranges and reds, to ocean, bushland, greens and blues.
During the Lake Mungo visit I went to the park one evening to watch the last rays of sunset and then the falling night of night. Under the full moon long shadows took shape and the whole place was bathed in a pale, otherworldly light under a vast canopy of sky. The prints and the painting 'Lake Mungo' reflect my memories of that night and the lingering sensations that remain.
I have been a regular visitor to the Waratah bay region for 20 years. It is a treasure trove of natural beauty, more of which I continue to discover. It's an easy task to find oneself alone on one of the many beaches in the area and effortless slip into dreaming of the countless footsteps that have gone before in the near and very, very distant past.
Lee Skubiszewski was born in Melbourne and graduated in Art and design from Swinburne University in 1971. During the 1980's Skubiszweski produced several collections of 'wearable art' - knitwear, and exhibited work in group and solo shows around Melbourne.
She didn't begin exhibit again until 2002, but the journey she is undertaking now began in 2004 which she visited in Central Desert for the first time. It was then that she discovered landscape painting. She mounted her first solo exhibition of landscapes in Melbourne in 2005 and a second in 2007 at SPAN galleries, Melbourne. In 2005 she was selected for entry in the Hans Heysen landscape award and also won an award at the Central Australian Art Society awards.
