This concert includes a special work commissioned by the ASO with
the support of the Schueler Composition Award (2010), established
through the generosity of Mr Norman Schueler and Mrs Carol Schueler,
in honour of Mrs Gogo Schueler. Bernd Glemser, with rock solid
technique and take-no-prisoners virtuosity, is equally at home with
Liszt’s wonderfully macabre bravura and the quicksilver brilliance and
wit of Rachmaninov. Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony originally titled
‘A Soviet Artist’s Reply to Just Criticism’ with the uniquely visceral
excitement of its climaxes, is one of the few twentieth century
symphonies to acquire the coveted status of a ‘classic’. Is there an
undercurrent of cynicism and irony beneath the epic dimensions?
