Boxcopy

Industry: VisualArt
Location: Brisbane QLD
Summary Description: Boxcopy is a Brisbane based artist-run-initiative which aims to engage with experimental and innovative artistic practice and support young and emerging artists. Boxcopy is dedicated to delivering a program that encourages critical engagement with a range of mediums, ideas and approaches to art practice.
History: Founded in 2007 by six Queensland University of Technology visual arts (Honours) graduates, Boxcopy was established to address the lack of exhibiting and networking opportunities for young graduates and emerging artists in Brisbane. From an early stage, the ARI developed a strong focus on artistic process rather than commercial gain, and to provide emerging and mid-career artists exhibiting resources and networking opportunities free of charge. Boxcopy is based on a strong commitment to highly experimental and challenging approaches to contemporary art practice and began presenting shows featuring installation-based work, including video, sound and other forms of technology. Boxcopy operates on a not-for-profit and volunteer basis and is run by a committee of seven art practitioners: Joseph Breikers, Anastasia Booth (Intern), Timothy P. Kerr, Channon Goodwin, Daniel McKewen, Raymonda Rajkowski and Tim Woodward. In 2008, Boxcopy was successfully selected for a newly established Artist-Run Initiative in Residence program at Metro Arts, Brisbane. With an ambitious program of monthly solo and group exhibitions in a studio space in the Metro Arts building, open for public viewing throughout the week, Boxcopy built a loyal audience comprised of students, artists and industry-based professionals. In 2009, Boxcopy secured long-term a new and independent venue in the heritage-listed Watson Brothers Building, 129 Margaret Street, Brisbane, which it fully self-funded by the ARI. Within this new location, Boxcopy has received funding from Arts Queensland and Brisbane City Council to deliver a program of projects featuring new work by emerging and mid-career local artists, and to provide further exposure for artists, Boxcopy extended its opening hours to Wednesday – Saturday 12-6pm. In 2010-11, Boxcopy aims to further refine the ways it supports artists and writers in this venue with projects that are dedicated to producing and exhibiting new work.
